Here’s How to Clean Your Windows to Make Streaks a Thing of the Past

Cleaning windows is a routine household task. However, it’s also one that gives most people more than its share of trouble. If you’re tired of dealing with streaks no matter how carefully you clean, try these simple tips to enjoy a streak-free shine every time.

Choosing the Right Cleaning Supplies

To get the job done right, you will need proper window cleaning tools. If you’re working with whatever you have on hand, such as paper towels, then you likely aren’t going to get good results. Suggested cleaning supplies include:

  • Bucket
  • Spray bottle
  • Sponge
  • Squeegee
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Cleaning solution

Depending on the specific type of cleaning solution you need, you could find yourself needing either a bucket, spray bottle, or both. Try to get high-quality sponges, squeegees, or microfiber cloths to enjoy the best results.

Finding the Optimal Cleaning Solution

Whenever you visit the grocery store, you’ll see countless window cleaning solutions lining the shelves. It can be difficult to determine which one is right for your windows at home or if you should go with a DIY solution instead.

Most store-bought window solutions contain some form of ammonia. This makes them highly effective cleaners, but ammonia is not the most pleasant chemical to be around. As long as you avoid direct ingestion, inhalation, or contact with your eyes, store-bought cleaners are still fairly safe.

However, you might also consider going for a more natural option. Vinegar mixed with water is one of the most traditional window cleaning options. Vinegar is made up of dilute acetic acid, which makes it excellent for powering through stubborn dirt.

Improving Your Technique

The tools and solutions you use to clean are essential, but so is the form you use when cleaning. Certain methods are more effective at dealing with streaks. With a little practice, you can become a real pro.

First, use a duster or dry cloth to remove dry debris, including cobwebs and dust, as they’re easier to deal with before applying a cleaning solution. Next, spray your solution onto the window or spread it using a sponge.

Next, wipe the solution with the microfiber cloth. Stick to small circles, moving down the window as you go from top to bottom. The most important step is to take a dry cloth and repeat the wiping after the initial pass to remove as much solution as possible.

Dealing With More Serious Messes

A simple scrub-down isn’t always enough to take care of your windows. There are a few signs to watch out for that might indicate a need for window replacement rather than just cleaning.

Any signs of mold are a serious concern. You could require window replacement or even mold remediation for the entire room. Windows are often the first spot where mold appears, so don’t hesitate to take action at first sight.

Maintaining Your Windows in the Long Term

Routine cleaning can go a long way to protect your windows and keep an eye out for mold and other issues. Continue refining your technique, and don’t be afraid to try out new cleaning products. Eventually, you’ll be like a real professional window cleaner.
